| Dear WAPC Executive Council Members, | |
| I am pleased to report that I have heard from a majority of our active members, and all have agreed to modify our Constitution to permit former WAPC Presidents to join our Executive Council. These include the Honorable Oktay Ekþi and the Honorable G.N. Ray.

| FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE WAPC EXPRESSES ALARM AT JOURNALIST ARRESTS IN TURKEY | |
| The World Association of Press Councils (WAPC ) joins with press freedom organizations, such as the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), The International Press Institute (IPI), and Reporters Sans Frontieres (RSF), in raising our voice in alarm over arrests of journalists in Turkey!
In recent days, the Turkish government has continued what appears to be a campaign against Turkish journalists and aimed at silencing critical voices. There have been wholesale arrests and seizure of documents and computers. Government statements indicate that the arrests stem from an alleged plot to overthrow the government, but evidence and specific charges are kept secret!
