World Association of Press Councils (WAPC)
Executive Council Meeting
Lefkosa, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC)
March 26-28, 2010
DECLARATION
The members of the WAPC reaffirmed their commitment to raise their voices in support of all people to enjoy a free and independent media as a basic human right. They also reaffirmed commitment to assist journalists to achieve high ethical standards in the practice of their craft.
The meeting, convened by the Hon. Justice G.N. Ray, Chairman, Press Council India, and President of the WAPC, was the realization of a commitment made by the WAPC General Assembly at its July 2009 meeting in Istanbul to convene council meetings 1-2 times a year to strengthen the organization’s impact.
Delegates shared recent challenges to media freedom in their respective countries, as well as best practices and strategies for improving conditions. All agreed that strengthening the WAPC through increased financial support, the undertaking of joint projects and new strategic planning would result in a better media environment for current and potential member states.
It was recognized that unity in solving problems was important, and the WAPC welcomes participation by and with all organizations that share its goals and commitment to freedom of communication.
To further goals of insuring diversity and increasing understanding among members, it was decided to rotate the venue of meetings among member countries, with a meeting in October 2010 in Nepal, one in March 2011 in India, and one on the African continent to follow.
In closing, delegates expressed their sincere appreciation to the Turkish Press Council of Northern Cyprus, especially its Chairman Ismet Kotak and his associates.
